THEO는 2025년 9월 18일부터 10월 18일까지 Jack Kabangu의 첫 한국 전시 [Dark Face Painting]을 개최합니다.

THEO will present Jack Kabangu’s first exhibition in Korea, [Dark Face Painting], from September 18 to October 18, 2025.

THEO는 동시대 미술이 단순한 형식 실험을 넘어, 정체성·역사·기억·무의식의 복합적 층위를 교차시키는 장이라고 믿는다. 미술은 재현(representation)에 머무르지 않고, 억압된 과거를 새롭게 직면하며 다른 서사를 창조하는 수행적 과정이다. 이번 전시에서 THEO는 이러한 문제의식을 구체적으로 구현하는 작가, 잭 카방구(Jack Kabangu, b.1996, Zambia)를 소개한다.

THEO believes that contemporary art is more than a site of formal experimentation; it is a field where identity, history, memory, and the unconscious are continuously reconfigured. Art is not simply an act of representation but a performative process that confronts suppressed pasts and invents new narratives. In this spirit, THEO presents the first solo exhibition in Korea of Zambian-born artist Jack Kabangu (b.1996).

한국에서 처음 선보이는 개인전 〈Dark Face Paintings>는 카방구가 지속적으로 탐구해온 얼굴 형상의 변주를 통해, 개인적 기억과 무의식, 집단적 역사와 정체성이 교차하는 지점을 드러낸다. 그의 얼굴은 단순한 인물화가 아니라, 관람자의 감정과 해석을 비추는 다면적 거울이다. 불안, 분노, 기쁨, 두려움이 한 화면 안에서 뒤섞이며, 작품은 단일한 의미로 환원되지 않는 열린 장(場)을 형성한다.

His series 〈Dark Face Paintings〉 lies at the heart of this exhibition. For Kabangu, the face is not merely a portrait but a site of endless repetition and variation—where personal memory and the unconscious intertwine with collective history and identity. Each visage becomes a mirror that reflects multiple emotions—anxiety, anger, joy, fear—resisting a single, fixed interpretation and instead opening a field of layered meanings.

카방구는 아프리카 전통 가면의 조형 언어를 참조하면서도, 19세기 서구 사회가 남긴 인종차별적 캐리커처, 예컨대 짐 크로우(Jim Crow)나 골리웍(Golliwog) 같은 이미지를 전복한다. 화면을 채우는 격렬한 붓질과 강렬한 색채는 차별적 상징을 새로운 정체성의 기호로 바꾸어내며, 억압의 역사에서 벗어나 주체적 힘과 생명력을 획득한다.

Kabangu draws upon the visual language of African masks while simultaneously subverting the racist caricatures of 19th-century Europe, such as the Jim Crow or Golliwog figures. Through bold gestures and vivid color, he transforms these discriminatory symbols into new emblems of identity—imbued with agency, resilience, and vitality.

형식적으로 그는 추상표현주의의 제스처와 두터운 물질감을 이어받으면서, 음악적 리듬과 개인적 기억을 결합해 자신만의 회화적 언어를 창조한다. 화면 속 소용돌이, 만다라 같은 꽃 형태, 유령과 같은 형상들은 꿈과 무의식의 파편을 소환하며, 현재의 시간이 그 빈 공간을 채우는 과정 속에서 새로운 의미를 얻는다.

Formally, his paintings inherit the gestural intensity and material weight of Abstract Expressionism, yet they merge with musical rhythm and fragments of personal memory to create a distinctive visual language. Swirling currents, mandala-like floral motifs, and ghostly apparitions summon fragments of dreams and the unconscious, while the present moment fills these gaps with renewed meaning.

〈Dark Face Paintings〉는 빛과 어둠, 질서와 혼돈, 아름다움과 추함이 교차하는 경계에서 탄생한다. 이는 단순한 회화적 표면을 넘어, 정체성과 기억, 감정과 욕망이 중첩된 역사적, 문화적 지층을 드러내며, 나아가 억압의 과거를 새롭게 재구성하고 미래의 가능성을 상상하는 동시대적 실천으로 확장된다.

〈Dark Face Paintings〉 emerges at the threshold where light and darkness, order and chaos, beauty and grotesque converge. Beyond the painted surface, the series reveals the historical and cultural strata of identity, memory, emotion, and desire. Kabangu’s work not only overturns the wounds of the past but also constructs a space for selfhood in the present, while opening a horizon for imagining the future.
