Wonkyo Choi
b. 1981 / Korea
Choi Wonkyo explores the transformation of digital images into tactile, sculptural forms, engaging with themes of materiality, perception, and the boundaries between image and object. His practice often involves carving, assembling, and reconfiguring printed and digital imagery into layered surfaces that resemble both machine-generated aesthetics and physical reliefs.
Recent works include theWaterfall(2023),Figure(2023), andFactory(2022–23) series, which reinterpret photographic and industrial imagery into sensorial, almost architectural objects. By materializing visual data, Choi invites viewers to reconsider the relationship between virtual images and physical reality.
Choi has participated in residencies at the Hongti Art Center and Ulsan Art Studio, and his works have been exhibited at institutions such as the Busan Museum of Contemporary Art and Ulsan Art Museum.
JEJn’s work, which uniquely fuses the artisan culture of medieval guilds with the symbols of contemporary consumer society, offers a visually striking experience that transcends time, delivering sharp insights into modern human desires. His pieces prominently feature luxury brand logos such as Chanel, Rolex, Hermès, Nike, and Comme des Garçons emblems of contemporary consumerism that function as the most candid symbols stimulating our desires.By juxtaposing the labor of medieval craftsmen with the consumption of modern brands, his work provides a profound reflection on the value of labor and the meaning of consumption within capitalist society. Through the extraction, synthesis, and reconfiguration of diverse images or by deliberately clashing clichéd visuals Jejn presents a black comedy of contemporary consumer culture.
